Octametallic Cyanide-Bridged Complexes: From Synthesis to Applications in Molecular Electronics
Guided by the exploration of novel magnetic and redox-switchable materials, our research group focuses on the design and development of polymetallic complexes. Among other systems, we are investigating octanuclear cyanide-bridged complexes with a cubic architecture, in which each vertex is occupied by a 3d-metal cation (Fe, Co, Ni, Mn). These are molecular counterparts of the well-known Prussian Blue analogues. In contrast to other cyanide-bridged clusters, these assemblies exhibit exceptional solution stability, enabling their characterisation in solution and making them suitable for potential applications via solution-processable methods.
This seminar will provide an overview of the synthetic strategy used to construct these cubic complexes, highlighting classical coordination chemistry approaches, the critical role of blocking ligands and opportunities for their chemical modification. Depending on their metal composition, these cages display valuable magnetic, electrochemical, and spectroscopic properties. Finally, our first steps toward the integration of these nanometric-size complexes into thin-films materials and molecular electronic devices will be also discussed.
